West Africa

Nigeria: Government advised to lower interest rates and taxes for companies in the renewable energy space to incentivise investor. The report notes that similar actions in China, India and the US have been successful and will contribute to meeting the demand shortfall of over 90,000MW. All Africa.
Cóte d'Ivoire: KfW and the European Union give $42 million for the construction of a 37.5MW solar PV plant. The plant which will be grid connected is part of the government's plans of installing 150MW per year. PV Magazine
Nigeria: Ministry of Power set to go off-grid in a bid to reduce its energy bills. The roof top project is expected to cost US$2.5 million and have a generation capacity of 750- KW and will be executed by Proserve Energy Services Limited. All Africa
Nigeria: Government extends deadline to revive US$2.5 Billion solar power projects. The projects are most likely to be built in the northern states with IPPs demanding US$0.11 while the government insists on US$0.075. All Africa
Sierra Leone: 5000 solar-powered streetlights set to be installed in support of the nations electrification agenda. The project has been hailed by the energy sector since the nation is just recovering from the recent Ebola outbreak. All Africa.

East Africa

Kenya: Lamu coal plant faces further delays after the High court reinstates all the stop orders concerning the project. Ruling comes in the wake of recent protest during the Global Climate Action Summit. Business Daily
Ethiopia: Option of connecting the 6.45GW Grand Renaissance Dam to Saudi Arabia though the Sea and Yemen under consideration. The middle-east nation is looking to diversify its energy base away from the over-reliance of fossil fuel sources. Climate Home News
Tanzania: 240 MW power plant set to be commissioned. The combined cycle plant cost a total of US$344 million with most of the funding coming from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking and the rest coming from the Japan Bank for International Co-operation and the Tanzanian government. All Africa
Uganda: Nation begins construction of 25MW solar plant expected to cost $24.5 million. The project is part of a portfolio of projects owned by Xsabo Group who intend to build 150MW of generation capacity and invest $199m. All Africa

Southern Africa

Zimbabwe: National utility bosses arrested over graft claims involving an Indian Company. The claims surround US$35 million for equipment that was not requested but was supplied to the utility. All Africa.
Namibia: Trekkopje Solar project completed in the Erongo Region. The project with a generation capacity of 5.78MW was constructed at a cost of US$10 million by Bank Windhoek and Enertronica. All Africa
South Africa: Two coal plants with generation capacities of 557MW and 306MW face uncertainty with regards to financial closure after Standard Bank announces new policy on funding of the coal plants. EE publishers
Malawi: Government signs PPA with JCM Matswani Solar Corp for a 60MW solar plant. The plant is expected to be constructed by 2019 and the commitment of the government through the PPA is expected to allow the company to raise additional finance to bring the project to financial close. Caribbean and Southeast Asia

Philippines: Government starts conducting feasibility studies of geothermal potential in Mt Malindang. In addition, the government is looking to sign a memorandum of agreement with key stakeholders to ensure they have their support. Power Philippines.
Philippines: Department of Energy awaiting presidents approval in order to include nuclear energy in the country's energy mix. The project which is likely to take 7 years to construct is expected to contribute to the nations energy security. Power Philippines.
Vietnam: Indian EPC company signs contract with developer for US$80 million. The contract for 104MW of generation capacity is expected to be completed within one year of signing. Vietnam Energy Online
Caribbean: Grant funding for a renewable energy fund from the UAE set to proceed. The fund at US$34.5 million is expected to support renewable energy projects that can withstand category 5 hurricanes. Renewable Energy Caribbean

Africa General / Rest of World

America: President picks Bernard McNamee to join the nations top energy regulator. The move is likely to be in line with planned bailouts for coal and nuclear plants. Renewable Energy World
America: Company working on commercializing cheaper Zinc batteries for large scale deployment. The company claims the technology would reduce the need for Lithium batteries which are scarce and consequently more expensive to produce. The New York Times
India: Nation announces tenders for 1.2 GW of solar. The tenders split in sets of 500GW and 700GW will be awarded via auctions. PV magazine
Turkey: Set to attain 14GW of installed solar capacity by 2023 from the current 4GW. Stakeholders, however, state this milestone is conditional on a clear regulatory framework and establishment of domestic production of PV technology. PV technology
