On the 9th of August, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will release the first report under its latest assessment cycle, its most comprehensive analysis on the science of climate change since 2013. 

It is predicted that the report will act as a “wake-up call to governments” by assessing whether the world is on track to meet the Paris Agreement targets and, in turn, play a vital role in shaping discussions at COP26 in November. 

Whilst 20 fossil fuel companies are responsible for one third of all carbon emissions, Camco is working to reduce energy sector emissions by driving the clean energy transition, and making a contribution to reducing emissions in the regions where we work. 

Our expertise in the off-grid space has led to climate change adaptation and resilience benefits. Over the last three months alone, more than 138,000 people were connected to clean electricity for the first time across Sub-Saharan Africa through REPP-supported off-grid projects, bringing the total connected to date to over 719,000 – a testament to the hard work and innovative business models of REPP’s investees. I have no doubt that the scientific findings presented by the IPCC on Monday will once again highlight the risks that climate change poses and I hope it causes governments and leaders around the world to take action.

- Somalia has one of the highest combined wind and solar energy potentials on the planet and the international community is taking note.

Tanzania: Egyptian President follows up on dam progress (Energy Mix Report)
- The president checked on the implementation status of the Julius Nyerere hydropower plant and dam, asserting the requirement that the project is complete in accordance with global standards. 

Southern Africa

Botswana: Solarcentury and Shumba to developer Tati solar project (Afrik21)
 - A partnership agreement between the two companies has been signed to co-develop solar projects in Southern Africa, including the initial 100MWp Tati project. 

South Africa: More financing required for renewable energy (Energy Mix Report)
- The Presidential Climate Commission proposes the mobilisation of USD750 million annually from public and private sources by 2030 to meet the country’s climate ambitions.

South Africa: Country has endured severe outages in 2021 (Energy Central)
- Since January, South Africa has experienced 650 hours of outages and intensive load shedding.

South Africa: Enel Green Power (EGP) contributes to county’s renewables industry (Engineering News)
- EGP has 12 wind and solar plants in the country, where it is undertaking several initiatives to uplift communities locally.
