Friday, 3 June

Dear <<First Name>> ,

COVID-19 continues to hold the headlines across most countries in Africa, as it does across the entire world. Even Burundi, which until this week had been downplaying the gravity of the pandemic, is now declaring it the country's "biggest enemy".

No one is sure how long the crisis will continue, or just how deep its impacts will be. But what we do know is that renewable energy can – and must – form a central part of the global recovery process.

Aside from the fact that the rapid and widespread deployment of clean energy generation is critical to any chance of keeping global warming below 2C – let alone 1.5C – it also provides transformational opportunities to the world’s most disadvantaged communities. Off-grid renewable energy solutions in particular can – and increasingly are - supporting the development of healthier, prosperous and more equal societies that are more resilient to climate impacts and, dare I say it, further pandemics.

COVID-19 has caused enough devastation – we cannot let it derail us from the sustainable future within our grasp.

Stay safe
