West Africa

Ghana: Africa Development Bank under the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa gives a $1.5 million grant to assist the renewable energy industry. The grant is aimed at supporting technical, commercial and feasibility studies. ESI Africa
Nigeria: Government approves $64million to support and improve power supply in the delta state. All Africa
Ghana: Nation advised of looming tariff increase as a result of the introduction of private individuals and organisations in the production and distribution of power. Energy Ghana

East Africa

Kenya: Turkana wind farm comes online and delivers first power to the grid. The 310MW wind farm had experienced delays as the 430 km transmission line to the grid was yet to be complete. Renewables Now
South Sudan: Nation set to increase populations electricity access from 1% to 21% by 2020 after completing 100 MW thermal plant outside its capital of Juba. The nation is however still facing a deficit of 500 MW. Green Building Africa
Tanzania: State owned utility launches tender for the supply of 150 MW of power. The projects are expected to range between 20 MW and 50 MW and will be under a build, own, operate, transfer arrangement. PV magazine
Rwanda: Nation inaugurates $20 million power sub-station. The sub-station was built under the Project for improvement of Sub-station and Distribution that started in 2011 and received support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. All Africa

Southern Africa

Namibia: 5MW solar PV plant inaugurated in the capital. The off-grid plant will be supplying power to Ohorongo Cement. New Era
Zambia: GETFiT announces tender for up to 100 MW of total generation capacity set aside specifically for small hydro plants. Green Building Africa
South Africa: The committee on Energy invites interested stakeholders to submit comments on the newly unveiled Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). The plan guides energy infrastructure and is prepared by the Department of Energy. Alternative Energy Africa
Angola: Government bets on renewable energy technologies to speed up the electrification of rural areas. The government intends to use off-grid and mini-grid installations to avoid the high cost of grid connectivity. Alternative Energy Africa

Caribbean and Southeast Asia

Vietnam: Binh Thuan province set to receive 39MW solar PV plant. The plant will produce 80,000MWh of power and is expected to cost $40 million. Vietnam Energy
Vietnam: Government begins termination of wind farm citing delayed progress. The farm with an expected output of 135,000 MWh was expected to cost $120 million. Vietnam Energy
Cayman Islands: Government commits to converting 10% of its fleet to electric vehicles in line with the National Energy Policy over the next 5 years. Renewable Energy Caribbean
Caribbean Islands recovering still recovering from the effects of hurricanes a year ago. Islands now focusing on resilient grids and power infrastructure. Renewable Energy Caribbean

Africa General / Rest of World

World Bank commits $1 billion to support energy storage in developing countries mainly in Africa and South Asia. The Accelerating Battery Storage for Development program will be intended for both on-grid and off-grid solutions and will be used to leverage additional concessional capital and private sector investments. Green Bonds issue goes beyond $100 billion for the third year with the Belgian government issuing the largest Green Bond so far. BNEF
Democratic Republic of Congo: GE and BBOX partner to provide energy for small businesses and organisations. The off-grid solution will use solar energy, battery and diesel with a capacity of up to 30 kW. BBOX
J ordan: Al Husainiyah Power Generation company secures 20-year PPA to supply the National Electricity Company, as the fifth project of a second licensing round. All the projects will be completed on a build, own operate basis. PV magazine
Australia: German contractor set to begin construction of the nation’s largest utility scale solar PV plants. The limondale solar farm, with a 350 MWp generation capacity is set to begin operations in mid-2020. PV magazine
UK: Unfavourable government policies and lack of government funding to blame for the relatively flat installation rate in solar PV with the last year having recorded a 1.7% increase. PV magazine
