REPP news

REPP this week published its latest annual report and financial statements. The 56-page report tells you everything you need to know about how the UK government-funded programme has been performing.
Story of the week

Madagascar has secured a US$43 million loan from the AfDB to finance phase two of the Power Transmission Network Reinforcement and Interconnection Project, which aims to connect two major cities and supply up to 8 million people with clean and affordable energy.

Southern Africa

Madagascar: Government secures US$42.9 million loan from AfDB for power transmission project (ESI)
- Funds will be for the second phase of the Power Transmission Network Reinforcement and Interconnection Project that will connect the major cities of Antananarivo and Antsirabe.

Mozambique: Solar Century to build a 11.2MW hybrid solar facility for Syrah mine (Afrik21)
- The facility will be developed under a public-private partnership and will provide power to the Balama graphite mine.

South Africa: IFC grant will provide US$200 million for renewables financing (Afrik21)
- The loan agreement with Nedbank is part of the IFC’s efforts to develop South Africa’s climate finance market and support the government’s plan to move to a low-carbon economy.

South Africa: Are energy policy changes really coming? (ESI)
- Chris Yelland, managing director, EE Business Intelligence discusses the current energy landscape.

Africa - general

General: AfDB allocates US$5 million to renewable energy projects in the Sahel (Afrik21)
- This additional funding will be used to develop the technical component of the “Desert to Power” initiative, benefitting G5 Sahel members (Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad).

General: AfDB approves US$7 million in SEFA technical assistance to transform mini-grids investment (AfDB)
- The grant will assist in setting up a mini-grid acceleration initiative to meet the needs of the continent’s fast-evolving renewable mini-grid industry.

General: AfDB has mobilised US$93 million in new pledges from donors for the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) (Energy Mix Report)
- The fund will also be transformed to make it a larger and more flexible financing mechanism that better meets the needs of the changing African energy market.

General: SEFA and CTF provide US$25 million for medium-scale IPPs (AfDB)
- Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa will provide US$15 million, while the Clean Technology Fund will provide US$10 million to advance African Renewable Energy Fund (AREF) II’s projects.

Mini-grids: Why cities are the growth market for mini-grids (GTM)
- Larger systems in urban and peri-urban markets are more viable for developers, argues Jason Deign.
