Last month we issued an innovation-themed request for proposals in a bid to seek out and support the deployment of innovative business models or first-time applications of existing renewable energy technologies across Sub-Saharan Africa. The response has been fantastic, bringing in nearly 40 applications spanning 14 countries, with solar accounting for around three quarters of those applications.

It was particularly encouraging to see the breadth of ideas and innovative business models which, as our Investment Director and REPP Lead Benjamin Hugues commented, “demonstrates how much uncapped potential there is within the sector for delivering clean energy access where it is most needed."

The REPP team are now assessing all of the applications and developers that are put forward to the next stage of the selection process will be notified in due course.

I would like to say a huge thank you – and good luck - to everyone who submitted applications. And just to add, although the RFP has closed we are always keen to get applications for funding from renewable energy pioneers working in Sub-Saharan Africa. West Africa

Côte d’Ivoire: 10 IPPs qualify to build two 60MW solar plants  (Afrik21)
- The results for the pre-qualification process for the construction of the Laboa and Touba solar plants through public-private partnerships have been released. 

Ghana: Bui Power to install eight solar plants by 2022 (Afrik21)
- The plants will have an installed capacity of 259MW and will be located in the north of the country.

Nigeria: Demand Aggregation for Renewable Technology (DART) program launched (Afrik21)
- The USD10 million programme, supported by All On and and Odyssey Energy Solutions, aims to reduce the costs of off-grid solar systems by allowing for the pooling of orders of equipment from solar energy companies.

Nigeria: All On invests USD1 million in Salpha Energy (Afrik21)
- The funding will allow the Lagos-based solar kit supplier to expand its range and stock of equipment dedicated to rural electrification.

East Africa

Kenya: Gitson Energy wins court case for 300MW wind farm (Afrik21)
- A recent Kenyan court ruling has ordered that the Bubisa farm be included in the list of approved power projects after five years of legal proceedings.

Kenya: Recent consumer study shows Kenyan consumers are satisfied with off-grid solar products (ESI)
- The study commissioned by CLASP shows that consumers in the USD1.75 billion market for off-grid solar products are pleased with the durability, price and aftersales services offered.

Southern Africa

Lesotho: Scatec signs agreement for 20MW solar project (Engineering News)
- The power purchase agreement (PPA), connection agreement and implementation agreement were signed at a ceremony held in the capital, Maseru.

Malawi: 60MW Salima solar power plant reaches commercial operations (Afrik21)
- This is the first solar plant in the country to be connected to the national grid and it was successfully completed under a public-private partnership.

South Africa: AFD loans USD100 million to FirstRand Bank (Afrik21)
- The transaction is part of the Transforming Financial Systems for Climate program, which aims to support local financial institutions in scaling-up climate impact finance.

South Africa: Mining industry to build 3.9GW of renewables (PV-Tech)
- The projects, worth an estimated USD3.77 billion, include solar, wind and battery energy storage systems which could provide Eskom with some much-needed supplemental capacity.

Africa - general

General: The impact of ATI’s Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF) is assessed (ESI)
- The analysis shows that the RLSF has been a success since its launch four years ago and has had a tangible impact on several projects in Africa.

Geothermal: Geothermal energy diversifies the energy mix in East Africa (Afrik21)
- Kenya currently leads the way in installed geothermal capacity, but countries such as Ethiopia, Djibouti, Tanzania and Zambia have plans to start implementing projects.
