Story of the week

The World Bank has approved a USD250 million loan to improve the performance of both electricity utilities and access figures in several cities across Angola. A further USD167 million line of credit has been provided by the AFD to cover the project's costs.

West Africa

Benin/Burkina Faso: The Off-Grid Energy Access Fund of the Energy Inclusion Facility (EIF OGEF) has provided EUR2 million in financing to solar home systems provider Qotto (Afrik21)
- EIF OGEF is financing the extension of Qotto’s services in both countries.

Burkina Faso: EU allocates EUR8 million to Yeleen solar project (Afrik21)
- The “Yeleen Project”, initiated by the Burkinabe government, aims to establish four grid-connected solar plants in the country.

Southern Africa

Angola: World Bank provides USD250 million loan to finance electrification investments (ESI)
- The project aims to both improve the operational performance of the national utilities and increase electricity access in several provinces.

South Africa: National regulator approves 40MW solar license for Gold Fields mine (Engineering News)
- This project is among the first to be approved by Nersa that deviates from the IRP for self-generation projects.

Africa - general

General: African Union to set up infrastructure fund to address annual infrastructure deficit (Reuters)
- The deficit, estimated to be USD60-90 billion, is preventing the continent from effectively establishing a single, free trade area.

Rest of World

EV: Recent report looks at lifecycle emissions of electric versus combustion engine vehicles (BNEF) / (Report)
- The report presents estimates for usage and lifecycle emissions for both car types to 2040 for the US, China, the UK, Germany and France.

Solar: BloombergNEF forecasts up to 209GW of solar power will be installed in 2021 (PV-Tech)
- Strong deployment forecasts in India and China, alongside an expanding supply chain, are expected to drive massive growth.
