Story of the week
A MoU has been signed between Sun Africa and AfricaGlobal Shaffer for the development of the largest mini-grid energy project in Africa to date, which aims to electrify municipal headquarters and major communes throughout Angola. 

West Africa

Burkina Faso: The African Development Bank approves EUR59 million loan (Afrik21)
- This loan will finance access to electricity for 218,400 houses in peri-urban and rural areas.

Nigeria: USD2 million invested in Fintech company to assist renewable energy providers (ESI Africa)
- Impact investment company All On has announced a deal with Infibranches Technologies Limited which aims to help bridge the country’s energy distribution gap. 

Sierra Leone: 1.2MW solar plant to power broadband network in Freetown (PV-Magazine)
- The Kenyan financial services company CrossBoundary Energy will finance the facility, which will be the first fully green network in the sub region.

East Africa

Kenya: Cooperative Bank of Kenya partners with Africa Guarantee Fund (CapitalBusiness)
- The two companies have partnered to provide SHS750 million in funding for micro and small enterprises in the clean energy industry. 

Southern Africa

Angola: MoU signed with Sun Africa and AfricaGlobal Shaffer for USD1.5 billion project (ESI Africa)
- The Angolan Minister of Energy and Water says that the project will improve electricity and water supply to the population and boost the economy.

Mozambique: Government approves new regulation for off-grid energy (GBA)
- The government has approved the Regulation for Off-grid Energy Access, which aims to provide greater clarity to all operating in the sector. 

South Africa: Mining company launches tender for 70MW solar plant (PV-Magazine)
- Exxaro Resources Ltd is tendering both an EPC contract and an operations and maintenance contract for the construction of a solar plant at it’s Grootegeluk coal mine.

Zimbabwe: JinkoSolar supplies panels for 5.5MW solar project in Gwanda (GBA)
- The project is valued at USD4.5 million and is due for completion by the end of 2021. 

Africa - general

General: EEP Africa selects 26 projects to join its clean energy portfolio (ESI)
- A total of EUR8.3 million was awarded to projects in 12 countries across Eastern and Southern Africa. 

General: Nithio raises USD23 million to scale lending operations (RenewablesNow)
-  The AI enabled clean energy financing platform has closed its first funding round, which included a USD10 million contribution from the US Development Finance Corporation. 

General: Claritas Capital provides USD10 million for solar mini-grids (Afrik21) 
- This funding will enable Renewvia Energy to expand its operations throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

Rest of World

Japan: INPEX issues USD90 million worth of bonds for clean energy investments (thinkGeoenergy)
- This is the first time that the Japanese oil company has issued environmental bonds, which will be used to develop geothermal and wind power plants.

Solar: Lightsource BP secures credit and trade facility for 25GW solar target (renews)
- The solar giant has secured USD1.8 billion in funding to expand its current portfolio of 3.8MW of solar projects to 25GW by 2025.
