Dear <<First Name>>

This week we launched our new toolkit to help developers identify and comprehensively manage the negative impacts their projects could have on both people and planet. Although developed specifically for REPP investees, the toolkit is freely available to all and provides guidance and a detailed framework for establishing and implementing an environmental and social management system (ESMS). You can download the toolkit and an accompanying workbook on the REPP website here.

The toolkit was unveiled at the annual REPP Academy, which wrapped up this week following a fortnight of online sessions exploring diverse aspects of renewable energy project development in Africa. From risk mitigation and access to finance to gender mainstreaming, effective ESMS implementation and EPC contracting, it was great to be able discuss so many important topics through a practical lens with developers and other key stakeholders from the industry.

I would like to extend a big thank you to the developers, speakers, investors and the whole of the Camco team who helped make the Academy such a success!

Cheers

Geoff Sinclair

Story of the week

The Kenyan government has distributed US$4.6 million to 18 off-grid solar companies as part of the Kenya Off-grid Solar Access Project. The funding will enable further distribution of clean energy and cooking systems in rural areas.

West Africa

Nigeria: Konexa and KAEDCO to develop sub-franchise project in Kaduna State (ESI)
- The companies will develop a private generation and distribution project consisting of a 2.5MW solar facility with a potential storage component.

East Africa

Ethiopia: EEU commissions 325KW solar system in eastern Somali region (Afrik21)
- The system will provide power to up to 2,000 households and forms part of the ‘5 Years of Light for All’ programme launched by the government.

Kenya: 18 clean energy suppliers get $4.6 million under KOSAP (Afrik21)
- The Kenya Off-grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP) will benefit people living in 14 rural counties.

Rwanda: Engie and OffGridBox partner up to provide green energy in Kigali (Afrik21)
- The collaboration will enable OffGridBox to supply electricity, drinking water and wifi to 200 households in the capital.

Southern Africa

Madagascar: 20MW Ambatolampy solar plant refinanced with €16.2 million (Afrik21)
- Several groups have participated in the refinancing of the project, which will enable developer GreenYellow to accelerate its investments and help Madagascar achieve its energy targets.

South Africa: Eskom gives status update on the power system (ESI)
- Eskom has managed to meet demand for three successive weeks with minimal use of its expensive open-cycle gas turbines.

South Africa: REIPPP bid window 5 is on the way (ESI)
- Request for proposals to be launched in December in order to open various bid windows, including window 5, to connect urgently required renewable capacity.

South Africa: Phakwe Group becomes country’s first majority black-owned and controlled IPP (Energy Voice)
- Phakwe now has more than 500MW of generation capacity after buying into the 30MW Witkop solar park.

Africa - general

General: Harmonised energy database will empower African energy sector, experts agree (ESI)
- The Africa Energy Information System (AEIS) should be improved in order to benefit stakeholders and present a better understanding of Africa's energy needs.

General: Africa Energy Forum kicks off the six-week Digital Energy Festival (Power Engineering)
- The AEF is the highlight of the African energy sector's events calendar and is this year based around the theme, 'The 5th Industrial Revolution’.

Rest of World

Solar: Technology development is driving solar LCOEs to new lows according to Lazard (PV-Tech)
- The new analysis from Lazard reveals that efficiency improvements and reductions in the pricing of system components have led to dramatic declines.

Energy efficiency: Recent DNV GL report ‘Transition Faster’ outlines EE as a secret weapon to reducing emissions (Energy Voice)
- Energy efficiency is seen as the most accessible and lowest cost tool that will accelerate the clean energy transition.
