Dear <<First Name>>

In the news this week, it was revealed that the Sengalese government is breaking up the monopoly of its power company to allow private investment.

With the overarching aim of achieving universal energy access by 2025, businesses will now be given access to transmission and distribution networks in a progressive attempt to draw in the necessary additional investment to meet the target and improve electricity supply.

Currently, the majority of Senegal’s 1.2 GW of installed power generation capacity is from fossil fuels, but like most nations Senegal is focussing increasingly on renewable sources to bolster its energy supply.

Officials will be hoping that opening up the door to greater private sector participation will help ensure adequate grid stability to accommodate power from intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. It should also ensure efficiencies in revenue collection for the benefit of stakeholders including IPPs.

This is an exciting and unprecedented move for the West African country, and if implemented successfully is a model that could be replicated across other countries in Africa.

Cheers

Story of the week
The government of Togo will receive an investment of USD40 million from the Exim Bank of India to improve electrification. The investment is in line with the country's National Development Plan and the objectives of the Togo 2025 roadmap. It is set to benefit schools, street lighting, agriculture and drinking weather supply systems across the country.

West Africa

Côte d’Ivoire: A tender has been launched for two new utility sized solar plants (ESI)
- A Request For Prequalification (RFQ) for the design, financing, construction and operation of two grid-connected solar plants has been issued. The plants will be created on an IPP basis with a total installed capacity of at least 60MWp.

Togo: Exim Bank of India to finance the electrification of 350 localities (Afrik21)
- The bank is providing an investment of USD40 million through the International Solar Alliance (ISA). Funds will be used to electrify localities and schools and will enable the installation of solar street lights.

East Africa

Uganda: Utilities 2.0 Twaake pilot has been launched (Afrik21)
- The aim of this integrated energy systems pilot, which is being coordinated by Power for All, is to both accelerate electrification and reduce costs by using off-grid solutions for the national grid.

Southern Africa

Namibia: Natura Energy and Globeleq reach agreement for 81MWp solar plant (Afrik21)
- This recent partnership agreement will enable the local Namibian company, Natura Energy, to construct the project with the benefit of Globeleq’s experience, which should accelerate the process.

South Africa: CDC invests USD50 million in Redstone Concentrated Solar Power project (Afrik21)
- The UK government's development finance institution will fund the construction of the 100MWp project.

South Africa: Eskom approaches World Bank and AfDB in bid to transition away from coal (ESI)
- Eskom has approached several financial institutions in a bid to raise USD10 billion. It will use the funds to shut down the majority of its coal-fired plants by 2050 and embrace renewable energy.

Zambia: ARE and SIAZ sign Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate electricity access (PV-Magazine)
- The Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) and the Solar Industry Association of Zambia (SIAZ) aim to address key challenges in the country and advocate to create a sustainable decentralised solar energy market.

Africa - general

General: Start-up Kowry Energy launches across Sub-Saharan Africa (ESI)
- The company, which has Rolls Royce on its repertoire of investors, aims to supply energy solutions using photovoltaic systems and battery storage of up to 1MWp.

General: AfDB and Exim Bank of South Korea agree to co-finance USD600 million of energy projects (ESI)
- The Korea-Africa Energy Investment Framework (KAEIF) pact focuses on renewable energy solutions in Africa, including generation, transmission, distribution, off-grid and mini-grid, policy and regulatory reform, energy efficiency and clean cooking projects.
