Dear <<First Name>>

The Powering Africa Summit kicked off yesterday with the aim of driving productive conversation to advance energy developments in Africa. Running until Thursday, the annual event will this year centre around virtual boardroom discussions and working groups covering a host of topics - with a particular emphasis on financing.

For my part, I have been invited as a guest speaker on Tuesday's Climate Policy and Financing session, which aims to tackle the questions of how global trends in climate change mitigation policy will influence investment decisions and what impact this will have on energy investments on the continent. With other panelists including U.S. International Development Finance Corporation's Chief Climate Officer Jake Levine and The Rockefeller Foundation's Director of Financial Innovation Stefanie Fairholme, I have high expectations of a genuinely fascinating and insightful session.

While there is no substitute for action on the ground, sharing industry knowledge and experiences in this sort of collaborative environment is critical for advancing Africa’s clean energy future, and I am certainly looking forward to learning lots.

If you want to join us then register soon, as spaces have been limited to 50 people and are running out quickly.

Cheers

Geoff

- Ministers recently announced a draft decree that will enable expropriation procedures to begin for the projects.

Togo: AMEA Power commissions 50MWp solar plant (Renewables Now)
- The Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed PV plant in Blitta was built less than 18 months after the PPA was signed and will generate enough electricity to power nearly 160,000 homes.

- The funding will be allocated to the East Africa Rift Geothermal Project.

Southern Africa

Mozambique: Government plans to divest its stake in the Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric dam (Energy Mix Report)
- The sale will allow it to mobilise the necessary financing to complete construction of the 1.5GW plant, which will cost an estimated USD2.4 billion.

Namibia: Windhoek seeks IPP for 25MWp solar plant (Afrik21)
- The municipality is launching a call for expressions of interest for the financing, construction and operation of the solar park. Interested parties have until 19 August 2021 to apply.

South Africa: Government denies Karpowership environmental authorisation (ESI)
- The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has refused Karpowership’s application to develop gas power at three ports.

South Africa: Mediclinic private hospital group signs its first solar PPA for six facilities (ESI)
- Moshesh Partners, a majority black-owned and black-managed alternative renewable energy asset manager, will install the solar systems.

Africa - general

General: FSD Africa Investments invests USD4.5 million into solar kits provider Nithio (Afrik21)
- Nithio, a platform that finances stand-alone solar systems powered by artificial intelligence, will reinvest the funds in solar kit providers operating in at least three countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
