It is with great pleasure that I can announce the appointment of Paul Makumbe, who has joined Camco as our first Pacific regional director and will be overseeing our expansion plans in the Asia Pacific region.
 
Paul is a genuine renewable energy entrepreneur who brings with him a vast amount of local knowledge and experience. Among his many accomplishments to date, Paul founded renewable energy business Sunergise International Limited, and before that was CEO of Oceanic Communications Ltd, a telecommunications and distribution company in New Zealand and the Pacific.
 
Capitalising on his local understanding and networks across the Pacific region, Paul will have responsibility for the delivery of our recently launched TIDES platform, which uses a blended finance structure to provide local developers with flexible financing and efficiently deploy funding to projects. He will also contribute to Camco’s overall business development and fund conceptualisation and formulation activities, including in operationalising and deploying Camco’s Spark Energy Services C&I finance platform focused on Sub-Saharan Africa.

Cape Verde: World Bank approves USD7 million in loans for clean energy (Afrik21)

West Africa: Ford Foundation launches Extractive Industry and Climate Change Governance Fund (Mining)

East Africa

Kenya: GivePower receives Energy Globe Award (PRNewsWire)
- Over 2,500 projects from 180 different countries competed, but the Kenyan non-profit organisation was victorious for its innovative solar water farm.

Malawi: African Free Trade Insurance Agency mitigates liquidity risk in renewables projects (ESI)
- The 20MW Golomoti solar PV power plant is the fourth project to benefit from the Regional Liquidity Support Facility.

Somalia: USD150 million project to improve the country’s energy access (TheEastAfrican)
- The World Bank funding aims to boost electrification and increase access to cleaner, lower cost electricity for approximately 7 million people.

Southern Africa

South Africa: Eskom make minimal effort to comply with pollution standards (ESI)
- The utility had applied for pollution exemptions for its power stations; five were denied, four partially approved and seven approved.

South Africa: Eskom to rent out land in Mpumalanga province for private power projects (TechCentral)
- The utility has 89,000 acres of unused land that will become available to the private sector to build clean energy facilities.

Zimbabwe: Construction completed on Nhimbe Fresh 1.99MW solar project (ConstructionView)
- The new plant will power the horticulture company's site in Marondera. 

Africa - general

Africa: New partnership to develop green mini-grids in Eastern and Southern Africa (Afrik21)
- The Africa Minigrid Developers Association and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa have formed an alliance to help electrify rural areas.

Africa: German bank to invest EUR49 million in mini-grids (PV-Magazine)
- KfW has established the Clean Energy and Energy Inclusion for Africa foundation to both acquire and install mini-grids, as well as to offer grant incentives for companies who invest in African renewables.

Cameroon/Chad: Lease agreement signed to deliver two hybrid solar and storage plants (ESI)
- The project will total 36MW solar power and 20MW/19MWh storage.

Tunisia: Government approves the construction of five solar PV power plants (Afrik21)
- The construction and management of these projects, totalling 500MWp, has been awarded to several IPPs.

Rest of the world

EU: Solar PV deployment hit new record in 2021 (PV-Tech)
- Despite supply chain disruptions and module prices increasing, the European Union has increased annual solar deployment by 34%, adding approximately 25.9GW.
