The UN’s decision to theme this year’s International Women’s Day around sustainability was both timely and sound. Timely because we live in an unstainable world where the window of opportunity for change is closing very rapidly. Sound because the full and equal participation of women is critical to being able to capitalise on the opportunities. 

Tuesday’s IWD was a chance to recognise and celebrate the many, many women – and girls – around the world who are working to build a brighter future today (and I am proud to say we have several of those women working with us at Camco). But it was also an opportunity to draw attention to the very many inequalities and biases that still pervade all sectors of society and which are quite literally threatening the future of the planet. 

Sustainability extends far beyond energy and climate change, of course. But within the clean energy sector that Camco operates, we have been trying to disrupt the status quo by casting the spotlight on the gender inequalities that exist and trying to help the people and companies we work with integrate gender equality into their business operations. Ghana: Country plans to build a utility-scale solar power facility (ESI)
- Meinergy and Huawei are collaborating to build 1GW solar PV plant and 500MWh energy storage system.

Guinea: Energy minister opposes energy transition (Reuters) 
- Gabriel Obiang Lima said African countries must focus on fossil fuels to maintain energy security before the green transition can thrive. 

Nigeria: Renewable energy players take the stage at MEE Dubai (TechnicalReview) 
- Businesses and government leaders at the event are sharing insights on policies designed to help achieve clean and accessible energy in Africa. 

East Africa

Kenya: USD53 million waste-to-energy project starts in Kakamega (Afrik21) 
- VR Holding has been selected by the government to carry out the work, which aims to reduce the cost of energy bills in the town by 50%. 

Rwanda: Guard Africa initiative selects country for climate project funding (Afrik21) 
- The initiative, implemented by Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, has selected 13 countries to receive support to help realise their climate objectives.

Southern Africa

Namibia: Development Bank finances solar project in Karas (EnergyCapital&Power)
- The 5.4MW Rosh Pinah Solar Park will contribute 30% of the power for a zinc and lead mine, whilst reducing carbon emissions by 6%.

South Africa: SAWEA calls on Eskom to expedite Mpumalanga land designation process (EngineeringNews)
- As the country struggles to cope with yet another round of load-shedding, the association has reiterated its call for increased power generation from renewable sources. 

South Africa: Roggeveld wind farm commissioned for the Karoo Plateau (Afrik21)
- The 147MW of electricity generated by the facility will be fed into the grid of utility Eskom.

Africa - other

Gabon: Solen to build 120MWp solar PV plant in Ayémé (Afrik21) 
- The facility will be located in Ayémé Plaine and will be commissioned in two phases.

Egypt: West Bakr wind farm commissioned in the Gulf of Suez (Afrik21) 
- IPP Lekela Power is inaugurating the commercial operations of the facility, consisting of 96 wind turbines with a capacity of 252MW. 

Tunisia: Amea Power set to develop 100MW solar plant (PumpsAfrica) 
- This Dubai-based IPP will develop the project in line with the nation's Vision 2030 for new energy, which involves increasing renewable energy allocation in its energy mix to 30% by 2030. 

Rest of the world

Ireland: Report shows half of power in February came from wind (BigNewsNetwork)
- The Wind Energy Ireland report also mentioned changes in energy prices and the importance of wind power for the nation.
